General Hurricane Preparedness Information
Don’t let a hurricane catch you off guard. Being prepared is key to staying safe!
To make your preparations easier please go through available checklists and make sure you have all your emergency supplies. Store this all together in watertight containers. Here are some of our tips to be prepared during hurricane season:
- Make a list of shelters near your home
as well as the route to get there and have necessities packed in advance for every member of your family. Check local sources for an overview of all current hurricane shelters in Aruba and always stay informed of the notifications made by authorities via the media, such as radio or internet.
- Prepare a disaster supplies checklist
A disaster supplies checklist lists items that may be useful during or after a storm. Make sure you have all items and that they are in good condition. Take these items with you into a safe room.
- Trim or remove damaged trees
Trees within close proximity to your home can have the ability to rub on or damage your roof when swaying in high winds.
- In the event of a Hurricane Watch – 36 hour countdown
stock up on water, ice, fuel, and other supplies you may need. Charge a power bank, your mobile phone, flashlights, radio and cordless screwdriver. Also make sure you have enough batteries and or solar powered lanterns and store them in your survival kit.
- Make sure you have enough supplies for your household
Include medication, disinfectant supplies, cloth face coverings, nonperishable food, water, personal hygiene items, and pet supplies in your emergency kit. Store all important documents in a waterproof container.
- Bring your companion animals indoors
and maintain direct control of them. Be sure that your emergency kit includes items for your companion animals and is ready to go in case of evacuation.
- Store enough water
And nonperishable food items for each family member for at least 3 days. Review how to purify your water and have an optional cooking plan.
